Educational furniture manufacturer invests £3m in new Dumfries & Galloway facility

Leading Scottish educational furniture manufacturer, EME Furniture, has invested £3m in the significant expansion of its operations at its Sanquhar home in Dumfries & Galloway. Now part of British Thornton, the UK’s largest group of educational furniture manufacturers, EME Furniture has substantially increased its manufacturing capacity through facilitating a move to larger premises, employing a significant number of new staff and investing in high-tech machinery.

Previously housed in two separate buildings totalling 35,000 square feet, the EME Furniture factory has moved to a single building of 115,000 square feet, trebling the floor space of its manufacturing facility.

Non-Executive Directors Appointed to Support National Growth

EME and British Thornton integrated with Claughton Office Equipment Ltd (t/a Claughtons) in September 2015 creating a £30m group, and becoming the biggest educational furniture supplier in the UK. The group has now strengthened its board through the appointment of two manufacturing gurus as non-executive directors.

Paul Rose, former Chief Executive of Yorkshire-based kitchen manufacturer Rixonway Kitchens, and Michael Bridge, former EMEA Sales and Marketing Director at international packaging business, Sonoco, have been appointed in an advisory capacity, in an effort to contribute to, and further stimulate, the groups impressive growth.

Celebrating 50 Years of EME Furniture

EME Furniture is celebrating 50 years of manufacturing at their factory at Blackaddie Road, Sanquhar.

A lot has changed in education since EME was established in 1965. Technology has advanced, school buildings have changed and the curriculum and teaching methods have evolved. EME supplier to Cumbria County Council Schools

EME Furniture have been successful in being selected as a preferred supplier on the Cumbria County Council framework, Supply, Delivery and Installation of Furniture.

The contract is effective from 1st October 2014 to 31st March 2017 and as well as the supply of furniture, EME also offers a free consultancy and space planning service to Cumbria schools.

St Stephen’s & St Bartholomew’s Primaries

EME Furniture was selected by North Tyneside Council, through the NEPO framework, as furniture supplier for a new build school to house two existing primary schools.

St Stephen’s RC Primary and St Bartholomew’s C of E Primaries now form two wings of the fantastic new school building in Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Multi-functional furniture and items that could be moved around to create different layouts were selected to meet the brief for flexible spaces.  Both schools selected similar furniture but kept their own identities with differing colour schemes. A complementary scheme to both schools was chosen for shared areas.
