EME Furniture recently furnished a brand new building housing St Stephen’s RC Primary School and St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School. The 472 place project in Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne brought together both existing schools, each one form entry primaries with nurseries

The project was run by North Tyneside Council and EME was selected as supplier within the NEPO framework.

EME furniture met with the head teachers and representatives from North Tyneside Council to discuss the vision for the schools. Flexibility was a key factor and although both schools chose to have very similar furniture, they kept their own identities with differing colour schemes.

Wedge tables were chosen for the classrooms allowing various layouts, from single tables for individual pupils to groups and linear formations. Each school has a circular central hall which is required to perform a number of functions. Flexible step seating units provide seating for assemblies and can be reconfigured as tables and bench seating, ideal for group work in the halls other function as a library. Mobile bookcases provide useful storage and can be cleared away when not required or their whiteboard backs used for project and group work.

The nursery areas for both schools were furnished with the Trudy range incorporating learning and play furniture.

Once the furniture was selected, EME produced drawings for each of the rooms to show the layouts and help visualise the final scheme. The furniture was delivered and put in place by EME for the schools opening in September 2014.

“It has been a pleasure working with EME and British Thornton on this project. The furniture was delivered and assembled in the agreed time slot, and all rooms were set up for us exactly as planned. We had a few minor issues, however, they were all resolved immediately with no quibble whatsoever.”
